2015-16 Concert Series Subscription
Tim Hecker (Montreal)
Saturday, November 28, 2015; 8PM
Free pre-show chat at 7:15PM
The Annex (823 Seymour Street, 2nd floor)
Single tickets $35/$15 (includes taxes and venue surcharges); available at brownpapertickets.com and 1.800.838.3006

Tim Hecker presents new works-in-progress partly derived from the early choral works of Franco-Flemish Renaissance-era composer Josquin, among other influences. Hecker reimagines these sounds for synthesizer, computer and guitar amplifiers.

Hecker's music inhabits a unique intersection between noise, dissonance, and melody. In his varied and celebrated works, digital and organic sources tightly intertwine. The result is a hybrid aesthetic that recalls electronic abstraction and psychedelic minimalism. Hecker purposefully obfuscates the clear tonal distinctions of traditional instrumentation, preferring to cultivate enigmatic, uneasy soundscapes. The beauty and crush of Hecker's sonically processed noise has been compared to "tectonic color plates" and "cathedral electronic music."

"[Hecker creates] foreboding, abstract pieces in which static and sub-bass rumbles open up around slow-moving notes and chords, like fissures in the earth waiting to swallow them whole."  New York Times

Experience the sounds of an original and exotic instrument  the viola d'amore  in the hands of celebrated, virtuosic soloist Garth Knox. A colorful multi-stringed instrument originating in the European Baroque period, and much favored by Vivaldi, the viola d'amore's full harmonic resonance and strikingly subtle and seductive sounds can be heard in a mixture of old and new music, masterfully played by Knox.

Specially commissioned pieces by Farshid Samadari* and Donald Stewart* are set between Elizabethan melodies, baroque variations along with some newer electronic resonances by Olga Neuwirth, Georg Friedrich Haas and John Zorn.

"(Knox) exhilaratingly liberated every timbre, note or noise his instrument could produce."  Queen's Hall, Edinburgh

Nicole Lizée & DJ P-Love (Montreal)
New Work* and Kubrick Études
Saturday, March 12, 2016; 8PM
Free pre-show chat at 7:15PM
The Annex (823 Seymour Street, 2nd floor)
Single tickets $35/$15 (includes taxes and venue surcharges); available at brownpapertickets.com and 1.800.838.3006

A re-interpretation and re-imagining of turntable culture, Nicole Lizée's new multimedia work forms an immersive installation-like experience, integrating damaged and glitched film, stop-motion, silkscreen art, and two powerhouse performers: DJ P-Love (Paolo Kapunan) on turntables and Rachel Kiyo Iwaasa on piano. The two players interweave, collide, juggle material, meticulously synchronize, and even exchange roles and instruments twisting and transforming turntablism as it extends into the concert music world. This new work will be paired with one of Lizée's earlier works for piano and glitch, Kubrick Études (2013).

Saturday, April 30, 2016; 8PM
The Annex (823 Seymour Street, 2nd floor)
Single tickets $35/$15 (includes taxes and venue surcharges); available at brownpapertickets.com and 1.800.838.3006

Hand Eye brings together a musical dreamteam: multi-Grammywinning ensemble eighth blackbird, and superstar composer sextet Sleeping Giant unite for an eveninglength work fizzing with the alchemy of twelve strong personalities. Hand Eye transports us to a soul-studded jam session (Ted Hearne), the buzzing contagion of an internet meme (Andrew Norman), a high-velocity adventure-ride (Robert Honstein), a shimmering yet blinding landscape (Christopher Cerrone), the flickering and pulsing of ink on paper (Timo Andres), and a warm, but tattered beauty (Jacob Cooper).

"eighth blackbird play like musicians possessed... they take wing, soaring on an upthrust of precision-tooled virtuosity."  BBC, London

Hand Eye was commissioned by the Stuart and Maxine Frankel Foundation for the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival and co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall.
