San Jose Wind Symphony
What do you get when you combine the sophisticated elegance of a symphony orchestra with the brash exuberance of a jazzy big band? You get the San Jose Wind Symphony which has been thrilling audiences of act ages for over 50 years. Under the spirited direction of Dr. Edward C. Harris this ensemble of 55 superb woodwind, brass and percussion players performs an entertaining mix of classical, modern and popular wind band music. One of the premiere adult bands in the United States, SJWS was recently honored as the only group from California to be selected to perform at the prestigious 2009 Midwest Clinic in Chicago.
The Wind Symphony returns to its classical roots as they explore transcriptions of major works for orchestra, including Copland's El Salon Mexico, Sibelius' Finlandia and the "Finale" from Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5. The guest artist is acclaimed pianist Avguste Antonov, performing Saint-Saƫns' Piano Concerto No. 2.
