GRJC Screening of The Sturgeon Queens
Prepare your palate, and join the Glen Rock Jewish Center Film Series for a special screening of The Sturgeon Queens, the story of the famed Lower East Side smoked fish emporium Russ & Daughters and the Jewish immigrant family who has run it for 100 years. To whet your appetite for this film, join us before the screening for a bagel with appetizing treats and a schmear.
100-year-old Hattie Russ Gold and her sister 92-year-old Anne Russ Federman have life stories that hit all the key notes of the New York Jewish immigrant experience: hard work, humor, romance, and a little tsuris. Hattie and Anne are the two surviving daughters from the famed lox and herring emporium Russ & Daughters on the Lower East Side, which opened its doors in 1914. They are also the stars of The Sturgeon Queens. The documentary, traces four generations of Russ family history, starting with Joel Russ, an Austro- Hungarian immigrant who began selling herring from a pushcart. The film also features interviews with prominent enthusiasts including Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, New Yorker writer Calvin Trillin, and 60 Minutes correspondent Morley Safer.
Director Julie Cohen will lead a post-screening discussion. Julie is a veteran television news producer and documentary filmmaker and the founder of BetterThanFiction Productions. She has directed and produced nine documentaries for WNET, including two that won the 2012 New York Emmy Awards for Best Arts Program and Best Historical Program.
