Gesualdo near Naples
Join us for an extraordinary journey not only into the world of 17th century southern Italy, but also into the mind of one of the most eccentric and compelling musical minds of early modern Europe. Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, nephew of St. Charles Borromeo, and great nephew of Pope Pius IV was a politician, humanist, composer, and murderer.Bold enough to slaughter his wife and her lover, Gesualdo was also bold enough to write music that flouted the bland harmonic conventions of the day as he plunged headlong into his intensely personal musical realization of the final agonies of The Christ. Choral Arts will surrounded this music with that of later day visionaries, Benjamin Britten and also Igor Stravinsky. The evening ends with the famed Gregorio Allegri's "Miserere," the sonic embodiment of angelic mourning and a fitting end to the Vesper Project.
