Lake Union Civic Orchestra: Beethoven and Shostakovich
Join LUCO for the double symphonic opening concert of our 2010-2011 season.

This concert is dedicated to the memory of our friend & colleague, George Shangrow

Beethoven's Symphony #8 is generally considered one of the composer's most magnificent orchestral creations, and Beethoven himself considered it "so much better" than his Seventh. What will you think of this light-hearted and charmingly delightful work?  He saves his best musical joke for last - wait until you hear how he perfectly skewers the tradition of the overly-exaggerated coda!

On a completely different note, Shostakovich's Symphony #12 is dedicated to the memory of Lenin.  But is it a genuine tribute or something more cleverly coded?  Either way, it's a work of epic power and sweep, almost cinematic in scope, emotionally charged with driving rhythms. And Shostakovich finishes with a passionately bombastic flourish in an exaggerated coda of his own!

Beethoven:  Symphony No. 8
Shostakovich: Symphony No. 12, "The Year 1917"

Christophe Chagnard, conductor
