Life's drama and mystery will unfold as the Island Chamber Singers perform the highly rhythmic cantata Carmina Burana at their Spring Concert, "Fate and Fortune," on April 17 and 19.
Accompanied by two pianists and five percussionists and led by director Jane Lindberg, the singers will perform the famous piece by Carl Orff, a 20th century German composer and conductor. Orff used texts from medieval poetry, often of unknown origin, that were originally performed by troubadours as they traveled around the villages in Europe. Embedded in themes of love, romance and beauty, the poems touch on other universal threads that connect people through the centuries - destiny, fate, fickle health, drinking, loneliness and heartache.
Orff was also a teacher, perhaps most well known for his method of helping children learn music through percussion. Since the first sound a baby hears is a heartbeat, Orff believed that developing a sense of rhythm was the natural way to begin to learn music. His method used singing, dancing, acting, and percussion instruments so as to engage the whole child.
Most people associate drums with percussion instruments, however percussion also includes dozens of instruments that can be struck, scraped or rubbed by hand, including cymbals, triangles, tambourines, xylophones, glockenspiels and bells. Many of these instruments will be used during the Island Chamber Singers' concert, which will feature both pitched (pianos) and unhitched percussion instruments.
The forty-member Island Chamber Singers, established on Amelia Island in 2004, have a varied repertoire, including Mozart's Requiem, Beethoven's Fantasia in C Minor, Brahms' How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place, Brubeck's To Hope! A Celebration, Handel's Coronation Anthems, Rutter's Magnificat, and selections from Aaron Copland and Gilbert and Sullivan.
The Spring concerts will take place at Amelia Plantation Chapel, 36 Bowman Road, Amelia Island, on Friday, April 17, at 7 pm and Sunday, April 19, at 3 pm. An opening night reception will be held in the Fellowship Hall immediately following Friday evening's performance.
