Strotter Inst. live performance at swissnex San Francisco
Strotter Inst. (http://www.strotter.org) is Swiss sound artist and turntablist, Christoph Hess. The tools of his trade are a conglomeration of specially modified and prepared turntables and woefully distressed vinyl. With them Hess creates dense fields of mesmerizing crackle and hum, propelled onward by woozy, trudging beats. Strotter Inst. will perform live at swissnex San Francisco, at the tail end of an extended U.S tour.
Admission to this performance at swissnex San Francisco is USD 5.00. Tickets have to be purchased in advance through Brown Paper Tickets. A very limited amount of tickets will be available at the door, but we highly recommend getting advance tickets.

Technology in music might mean shiny new laptop computers sitting pretty on performers' tables. But it could also mean something messier and altogether rougher, like mounds of discarded household appliances piled up, cross-wired and amplified: technological junk re-purposed as sound-making devices, often including recording and playback devices that belong to the antiquity of musical technology.
Christoph Hess, aka Strotter Inst., is one among several contemporary artists to draw from this lo-tech background - "Strotter" is itself is an old-timey German and Austrian expression identifying trash scavengers. Hess is part of a Swiss lineage of junk wizards going back, at the very least, to "cracked everyday electronics" pioneers Voice Crack and to turntable hacker and installation artist Christian Marclay. Strotter Inst. makes use of five vintage Lenco turntables, surrounded by an array of tape recorders, cut-up vinyl records, film tapes and other discarded materials: an arsenal with potent audio and visual capacities, which in its totality constitutes both an "inst."rument and a full-fledged "inst."allation.
When performing live, Strotter Inst. conjures the hiss and crackles of fellow turntablists Erik M, Philip Jeck and Janek Schaefer, the rhythmic detail of Steve Reich or Thomas Brinkmann, and a knack for confrontational grime inherited from classic industrial music units such as Throbbing Gristle. Don't miss him!
