When his brother Jozek's wife and children arrive at his Chicago home without explanation, Franek returns to his small Polish village after a 20-year absence. He finds his brother has been ostracized from the community for salvaging Jewish tombstones and is now subjected to constant threats and escalating violence. As the brothers struggle to rebuild their relationship, they uncover a dark secret that forces them to confront the history of their family and their hometown.
