Joy of Cooking Presented by University Book Store
Join us for a scrumptious evening with the authors of the revised Joy of Cooking in conversation with KUOW's Arts and Culture Reporter Marcie Sillman!
First published in 1931, the classic and authoritative Joy of Cooking has been in print for nearly ninety years. Updated and rewritten by Irma Rombauer's great-grandson John Becker and his wife, Megan Scott, this new edition honors Joy's extraordinary history, while updating all the recipes and essential information for today's audience. Readers will find many new international, vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free recipes, suggestions for cooking ahead, and tips for streamlining meal preparation. For the more ambitious cook, Joy now includes an entire section on fermenting, instructions for curing egg yolks and bacon, as well as countless opportunities for readers to dive into revised and expanded chapters on canning, cooking methods, techniques, and ingredients. Readers can end their day with a sip of home-brewed kombucha, or for the more free-spirited, a jungle bird or Irma's Prohibition-era formula for gin and juice from the expanded cocktail chapter. About the Event Authors
John Becker, great-grandson of Irma Rombauer, grew up surrounded by the natural splendor of the Pacific Northwest. Spending his childhood between Portland, Oregon and the Becker family home in Cincinnati, John learned to appreciate a range of approaches to cooking. Influenced by his father Ethan's improvisational style, and his mother's love of international foods and spices, John has an insatiable curiosity when it comes to food and cooking. After earning an English degree, he helped publish seventeen collections of literary essays before dedicating himself to the family business and updating Joy for a new generation. John currently lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife, Megan.
Megan Scott started working for the Joy of Cooking in 2010, when she and John Becker met and immediately bonded over a shared love of blue cheese. Megan's culinary education began in North Carolina, where she learned to cook from a long line of matriarchs. She grew up in a farming family, shucking corn and snapping green beans as far back as she can remember. She has been a cheesemaker's apprentice, a baker, and an assistant pastry chef, and in addition to her work for Joy she is the culinary director for a marketing agency that specializes in food. Megan lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband John and their two cats, Loki and Kishu.
In Conversation
Marcie Sillman is KUOW's Arts and Culture Reporter. She arrived at KUOW in 1985 to produce the station's daily public affairs program, Seattle After Noon. One year later, she became the local voice of All Things Considered. In 2005, she became KUOW's first special projects reporter. In this role, she produced in-depth audio portraits and documentary series about life and culture in the Puget Sound Region. In September, 2013, Marcie was part of the team that created The Record, a daily news magazine focused on the issues and culture of the Puget Sound region. After two years as Senior Host of the program, Marcie returned to full-time cultural reporting.
