Long Beach Shakespeare Company

Long Beach, CA

THE LONG BEACH SHAKESPEARE COMPANY STORY

The Long Beach Shakespeare Company was established in 1990 as the non-profit [501 (c)(3)] theatre arts organization "The-Bard-In-The-Yard." An itinerant company, its goal was to provide free Shakespeare in the parks of Long Beach in the summer. Now an acclaimed company with a resident theatre (since 2002), LBSC's mission is pro-literacy, and our goal is to inspire our audiences with year-round, quality, affordable, traditionally-based performances of classic literature.

December 21, 2017 8:00 PM - December 23, 2017 8:00 PM

The Long Beach Shakespeare Company will present the classic 1939 radio edition of A Christmas Carol. It was originally produced by Orson Welles for his Campbell's Playhouse (which is what The Mercury Theatre on the Radio became after The War of the Worlds broadcast. The Mercury Theatre saved their weekly series from cancellation with the success of that broadcast, and won a sponsor, Campbell's Soup). This Christmas broadcast was an annual tradition, first performed on Christmas Eve, 1939, starring Lionel Barrymore as Scrooge.

Free Speaker - Professor Stephen Dickey Shakespeare in the Golden State

January 28, 2018 2:00 PM

Along with the pioneers, prospectors, immigrants, and adventurers who headed west in the 19th century came a stowaway named William Shakespeare. He arrived in California by several routes: the printed book, the stage, and in the everyday spoken language to which he contributed so many words, images, and famous speeches. Professional actors followed, performing on the makeshift stages of mining camps and in the ornate theaters of our growing cities. (The earliest recorded performance of a Shakespeare play in California was Richard III in 1847.) Later, as the film industry shifted to Los Angeles, Shakespeare thrived in the silent era, when many of the actors drew on their earlier stage repertoires. In the modern era, too, Shakespeare is alive and well in offshoots that reset his plots in a different time, place, or cinematic idiom. For Hamlet with Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp in Tombstone, Arizona, try My Darling Clementine (1946); for The Taming of the Shrew in a contemporary high school, see 10 Things I Hate About You (1999); for Romeo and Juliet among the zombies, see Warm Bodies (2013). This talk will consider the amazing diversity and durability of Shakespeares impact on the culture of California.

King John by William Shakespeare

February 23, 2018 8:00 PM - March 17, 2018 8:00 PM

John, King of England, was the son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. He ruled in troubled times when England and France battled for supremacy. Shakespeares play was one of his most popular during Victorian times, partly because of its spectacle and pageantry. Today, however, its a rarely performed gem, and LBSC is pleased to present it to see what you, our audience, think of it. In 1942, George Orwell described it: With its intrigues and doublecrossings, non-aggression pacts, people changing sides in the middle of a battle, and what-not, it seemed to me extraordinarily up to date.

Free Speaker - USC Professor Rebecca Lemon

March 25, 2018 2:00 PM

Free Speaker - USC Professor Rebecca Lemon March 25, 2018 at 2pm FREE EVENT RESERVATIONS ARE RECOMMENDED. Falstaff And His Critics Come and learn from USC's Professor Lemon why Falstaff is one of Shakespeare's most popular characters! Falstaff is arguablyShakespeares most popular character. One Shakespeare critic calls him"a kind of god in the mythology of modern man," while another writesWhen we are wholly human . . . we become most like either Hamlet or Falstaff."Thistalk considers the praise of Falstaff next to the critiques against him, as a Vice character or aMachiavel. What do we make of this larger than life figure, and how do we assess his friendship with Prince Hal, whobegins by funding Falstaff's drinking but ends inabandoning his friend? And ifPrince Hal banishes him, what might Queen Elizabeth have foundso appealing in this beloved"whitebearded Satan" and an "abominablemisleader of youth"?Rebecca Lemon is Associate Professor of English Literatureat the University of Southern California. She is the author ofTreason by Words: Literature, Law, and Rebellion in Shakespeares England(2006), co-editor ofThe Blackwell Companion to the Bible in English Literature(2009), and associate editor of theBlackwell Encyclopaedia of English Renaissance Literature(2012).Her articles have appeared in numerous journals, and herELRpiece, Compulsory Conviviality in Early Modern England, received abiennial article prize. Her book,Addiction and Devotion in Early Modern England,is forthcoming from Penn Press in 2018, and herwriting on Falstaff have appeared in Lapham's Quarterly.
