Event
7th Ginoong Pilipinas USA
Established in San Francisco, California in 2002, Ginoong Pilipinas USA is an annual search for the best Filipino male role model. Over the years, it has become a renowned Filipino pageant for men in the United States.
Not to be confused with typical beauty pageants or body building contests, GPU works hard to serve the community and the contestants shine for their commitment to humanitarian efforts.
Now on its seventh year, the pageant continues to celebrate Filipino culture while promoting its charitable programs. Since its inception, it has been helping raise funds and awareness for various relief efforts here and abroad.
The organization has worked with American and Philippine Red Cross, San Francisco's Office of the Mayor; Philippine Consulate; Philippine Department of Tourism; and the Philippine Embassy in DC for holding fundraisers to benefit the victims and survivors of New Orleans hurricane Katrina, typhoon Reming in Albay-Philippines, mudslide in Leyte-Philippines, and California wildfires.
GPU has also collaborated with ABS-CBN Foundation and the Asian and Pacific Islander Wellness Center benefiting children's welfare, AIDS education and prevention.
Most recently they teamed-up with the office of Senator Leland Yee for his involvement in the White Ribbon Campaign, the largest worldwide effort of men working to end mens violence against women and children.
Recognized as the only known Filipino male pageant in the nation, Ginoong Pilipinas USA has been produced in different cities in the US: San Franciscos Herbst Theatre and Palace of Fine Arts from 2003-2006, New York Citys Philippine Center in 2007, and last year at the University of Southern Californias Radisson Hotel in Los Angeles.
2003 winner Getty Santos represented the Filipino American community to the 2005 Manhunt International pageant held in Korea. The competition is known as the world's top male modeling competition for men. He brought home silver honors.
Nomer Yuzon, Gettys runner-up got the judges' nod for winning the Most Photogenic award from the Mister USA pageant held in July in North Carolina while 2004 winner January Reclosado paid a visit to Bantay Bata's Children's Village in the Philippines and personally gave GPU's humble donation to the foundation.
Jerald Mutia, Chris' runner-up joined and won accolades at the 2006 Maharlikang Pilipino in Manila, Philippines.
Chris Friel from Seattle who won the title in 2005 got to represent GPU at the 2006 Manhunt International in China.
He won two awards: Bests in Personality and Popularity. Later, he joined and won LAs Mister Asia USA competition in 2007.
Winners Mark Figueroa (2006) from Chicago, Marc Gueco (2007) of Detroit, and Honolulus Kapono Kobylanski (2008) participated in various community events coast-to-coast and in the Philippines. Theyve successfully shared their experiences and inspired other young men to reach for their dreams.
This year's event promises to be bigger and better. About 20 finalists from numerous applications will be selected as we bring the pageant to the beautiful island of Oahu, in Hawaii. And as a tradition, the contestants will compete for the best in Barong Tagalog (Philippines' national costume), swimwear, tuxedos and one-on-one interviews.
Headlining the event is Jordan Segundo, the first American Idol finalist of Filipino descent and Hawaiis most popular singing sensation. He will be joined by Don Hos resident entertainer, Al Waterson and Hawaiis ABC news anchor Yasmin Dar as hosts during the pageant night.
Reigning titleholder Kapono Kobylanski will also grace the event as he pays tribute to his home state.
The new Ginoong Pilipinas-USA will embody the true meaning of a Ginoo - a Filipino gentleman who is responsible, hardworking and one who does not forget his roots and cultural traditions as he reaches out to his community.
This year's event is produced in part by JM and Marizel Mercado of Korusleine Productions and Ver Candari of Hotel Luz in San Francisco.
