Our organization was founded in 2005 and received non-profit status in November 2006. The organization currently consists of a core volunteer team of ten persons and a small Board of Directors. Founder and volunteer, Cory Ybarra, is the mother of a young adult with special needs and has a degree from San Jose State University in Health Science. She also holds a Certificate in Development Program Management from the Monterey Institute for International Studies.
A note from Cory: As the parent of a young adult with special needs, I had the privilege of traveling to the developing world and witnessing the conditions there. The issues remain the same worldwide, that being exclusion from the mainstream and discrimination. It was, however, further exacerbated by extreme poverty and superstition. I understood their challenge and knew their spirit. Out of this, Building for Generations was born.
The year 2005, I was asked by the Tanzanian community of persons with disabilities and their families for help to build a school. I wrestled with the inner resistance of "I don't know how and I've never done this before" over the course of several months upon my return. I clearly felt unqualified but even clearer I felt called. It was during that time that I received a copy of Emmanuel's Gift. His message to humanity to act from a place of heart, risk and trust, left me walking away saying "I can" and then "I did" and then WE (a team) did even more. It is my dream to bring his timeless message to others, whatever their dream.
