Empowerment Self Defense is the embodiment of the statement "I am worth defending." Join Empowerment Self Defense instructors Katie Gardner and Jessica Tope for a morning of self defense, self care, and women's empowerment. We will learn and drill physical self defense techniques that anyone can implement, as well as discuss and practice boundary setting and assertiveness skills. This class is open to all women and women-identified people, as well as girls over the age of thirteen if attending with a parent/guardian.
Katie is a Public Health Nurse who views sexual assault as public health concern, having reached the level of epidemic in our culture. She has been studying martial arts and self defense for 4 years and is a member of the National Women's Martial Arts Federation. She is studying to obtain her Empowerment Self Defense Instructor Certification through the NWMAF. She has taught self defense classes for Berea College, Ampersand Sexual Violence Resources Center, and Girl Scouts of the USA as well as at yoga centers and festivals.
Confidentiality, emotional safety, and therapeutic communication will be of utmost importance in this self defense class, as statistically at least 25% of all women are survivors of sexual violence. The class will encourage women to press into and sometimes beyond their comfort edges to try new things as a way of embodying assertiveness and self defense. The class will also emphasize the need for holistic self care and self-discovery.
Suggested donation of $30, but no one will be turned away due to inability to pay. Email empoweringmvmnt@gmail.com with questions.
