Music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman, book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, based on the 1988 John Waters film Hairspray. The songs include 1960s-style dance music and "downtown" rhythm and blues. In 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, large teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight, and then helps launch a campaign to integrate the show. Hairspray addresses themes of acceptance, difference and racism, while also being funny, moving and a whole lot of fun.
HAIRSPRAY is BPCMT's 6th annual musical. The philosophy of Brooklyn Players Community Musical Theater is the same as it has been at Brooklyn Players for the past 15 years - a nurturing and non-competitive artistic community that collaborates to put on shows with heart and fun. There is a range of performance experience and abilities in shows cast members, and there is room for everyone in the cast to be supported in their abilities to grow as musical theater performers. brooklynplayers.com Facebook: Brooklyn Players Community Musical Theater
