Title:
Field Trial of Microbially Induced Desaturation (MID) for Liquefaction Mitigation of Silt Soil: Longevity and Maintainence

Presenter:
Diane Moug, Ph.D., A.M.ASCE, Associate Professor at Portland State University

Presenter Biography:
Diane Moug is an Associate Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering department at Portland State University. She earned her PhD and Masters degree from the University of California, Davis and her undergraduate degree from the University of British Columbia. Her research work investigates earthquake liquefaction susceptibility, liquefaction mitigation, and characterization of soils, with a focus on fine-grained soils in the Pacific Northwest. Her work has included field trials of bio-based ground improvement, laboratory testing, post-earthquake reconnaissance following the 2023 Türkiye/Syria Kahramanmara Earthquake Sequence, and examination of site investigation tools with numerical and centrifuge modeling. She is a recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute Younger Member Award, and Maseeh College Researcher of the Year award.

Abstract:
Earthquake liquefaction hazards in silty soils are a critical problem in Portland, Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. This is a particular problem for existing facilities founded upon silty liquefiable soil, for which there exists no cost-effective mitigation solution at the present time. Recent studies suggest that liquefaction mitigation using microbially-induced desaturation (MID) may provide the capability to do this. The objective of MID is to reduce earthquake-induced excess pore water pressure generation compared to saturated soil and thereby reduce the potential for triggering liquefaction. This presentation will describe two field trials of MID for liquefaction mitigation performed at low-plasticity silt sites in Portland, OR in summer 2019. Monitoring at both sites indicated that liquefiable silts were successfully desaturated. Long-term monitoring at one site suggests that desaturation sustained five years. After five years, some resaturation was observed. MID retreatment was performed in summer 2025 to test whether retreatment is a feasible maintenance option, if required.
