Join Roots Farm, Kitsap Conservation District and NRCS for a whole day Biochar Workshop led by Jen Clark of Roots Farm and joined by Sean McDonagh and Rebecca Anderson from NRCS. Learn how to make biochar and its many beneficial uses including greatly enhancing soil life and fertility. Jen will demonstrate how to get from biomass to biochar and lead us in loading, burning and quenching the kiln. Sean and Rebecca will discuss how to incorporate this and other innovative practices on your farm. Diane Fish from Kitsap Conservation District will discuss how the Sustainable Farm and Fields grant program helps farmers to implement climate-smart practices to increase carbon sequestration and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This workshop will cover all of the innovative ways to maximize biochar's uses for dynamically carbon negative farming and integrate this practice into your farming system.
Highlights: Biochar Demonstration: Watch a Ring of Fire kiln burn and discuss its on-farm uses. Composting Approaches: Explore different composting methods and how biochar enhances them. Farm Conservation Practices: Get an overview of the NRCS EQIP and CSP programs that Roots Farm has been awarded over the years, and see how these practices have shaped their regenerative, climate-resilient approach. Sustainable Farms and Fields: Learn more about this grant program for climate-smart practices. Learn about Roots Farm, a no-till regenerative farm run by Jennifer and Kevin Clark, dedicated to soil health, food justice, and community education.
The workshop will include a potluck lunch please bring a dish to share. S'mores provided after lunch.
Farm Biosecurity Measures will be in place. To help protect the health of our farm and prevent the spread of pests and disease, we ask that all visitors practice good biosecurity. Please do not wear shoes or boots that have been worn on other farms. And wear footwear that can be easily sanitized. Upon arrival, well provide a sanitation station for cleaning shoes before entering production areas. Thank you for helping us keep our soil, plants, and animals healthy.
