Autumn Brazilian Carnaval featuring Bloco Alegria!
Join us for an exciting night of fun and Brazilian music with Portland's own Bloco Alegria!
Bloco Alegria is Portlands own percussion and dance ensemble modeled after the traditional samba schools in Brazil.
We are a fun-loving community of diverse drummers and dancers who love performing the musical styles from Rio de Janeiro to Bahia Brazil, and more. Our goal is to bring the beauty and joy of Brazilian carnival to Portland, Oregon. The origin of samba lies in African drumming music. Samba developed as urban music in the 1950s within the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Portland, Oregon saw the beginning of samba in the 1990s with The Lions of Batucada. The seed was
planted. Bloco Alegria was founded in 2011 to continue spreading the joyfulness of samba music to our community. Bloco Alegria includes singers, string players, and percussionists and dancers.
Our shows are a celebration of the music, dance, and culture of Brazil. We strive for high energy and lots of fun. Our performances vary between all-percussion parade type shows and dance-party stage shows with Brazilian song favorites. Bloco Alegria has enjoyed many collaborations with other musicians. Some collab examples include our self produced extravaganza with a local circus group and our most recent collaboration with Portland Columbia Symphony Orchestra.
We have also had the pleasure to play on stage with other bands such as Pink Martini and Portugal. The Man.
Bloco Alegria has strong ties to local, national, and international masters of Brazilian and Afro-Brazilian music. Many of the members of Bloco Alegria have traveled to Rio de Janeiro to participate in the carnival parades. We have sponsored some of the top samba leaders from Rio de Janeiro and Bahia here in Portland to provide group and individual workshops. We welcome all those interested in Brazilian music, percussion and dance to come join us. We teach weekly classes for anyone interested in joining us. We are always looking for new opportunities to get people hooked on samba!
