Berkeleys Black Repertory Group Theater, the oldest African-American theatre west of the Mississippi River, is proud to host the regional premiere of actor (A Man Called Otto, Chicago Fire, White Boy Rick) and playwright Peter Lawson Joness award-winning drama, The Bloodless Jungle (TBJ).
The play tells the story of State Senator Ethan St. John, a rising political star who is asked by the President to run for a critical seat in Congress. Ethan appears poised to defeat the incumbent Congresswoman when J.J., his best friend from high school is charged with having committed a serious sexual assault. Ethan, who believes J.J. to be innocent, soon finds himself battling with both the press as well as his win-at-any-cost campaign manager and faced with a daunting choice: does he abandon J.J. and focus on winning the election, or does he jeopardize the campaign by supporting his friend? The drama ultimately turns on Ethans decision and its consequences.
TBJ has enjoyed two successful productions in Cleveland, Ohio, and has received six staged readings across the country, including at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Dallas Convention Center, Duquesne University and in Harlem. Land of Cleve, an arts and cultural blog in Northeast Ohio, rated the 2017 production one of the best in the region that year and honored it with an Achievement Award. In its review, Land of Cleve called TBJ a Dynamic drama [and] a timely triumph of political proportions and added, Whether or not viewers care about politics, they cant help but get caught up in both the heated exchanges and the humorous interactions between the characters. CoolCleveland.com offered that The work is riveting. [Jones] doesnt hit a false note with the dialogue at any point . . . throughout this work Jones demonstrates his master and maturity as a playwright by dealing with age-old issues such as integrity, loyalty and friendship with the same keen sense and import that he devotes to modern-day issues.
