Bacchae at Tower Steps
A tragedy that embraces hedonism in transitory places and explores the dangers of denying one's inner desires by clinging to the strict structures of society. Lennon has spent this year working on a direct translation of Euripides' Bacchae which they have adapted into this genderfluid production. Join us as we celebrate Dionysus, the conductor of our divine debauchery, with a Bacchic Ball set at Wellesley's very own ritual space of indulgence: Tower Steps! PLEASE BRING PILLOWS/BLANKETS TO SIT ON! This is an outdoor theatre experience, thus bring what you will need to feel comfortable!
(Inclement weather may move us to the tower great hall)
Euripides Bacchae (406 BCE) Translated and Adapted by Lennon Lupton (2024 CE)
Note: This is the first staging of this adaptation. Actors will be on book, though there will be costumes and props. In a more realized production, a shrine to Semele would burn ever present on stage and the chorus would be larger. Thank you for being a part of the audience for this first production; my goal is to continue worshipping this script and I hope, one day, I may invite you all to a fully staged version.
Includes: intoxication, sex, dismemberment, fake blood, and filicide

Special thanks to Kate Gilhuly and the rest of the Wellesley Classics Department as well as David Towlun, Marta Rainer, and Chelsea Kearl from Wellesley College Theatre for their mentorship and guidance which made this production possible! Another shout-out to my wonderful friends and family who put up with my niche interest in queering Greek theatre: your support gives me the courage to pursue my chaotic dreams and your love generates a space where I am comfortable sharing the most vulnerable parts of myself, thank you.
