Family
San Jose City College's Theatre Arts Department is proud to commission well established local playwrights for our production of Family.

This unique experience provides SJCC students the opportunity to originate a role and meet with their playwright.

Se Llamaba Violetta  - PLAYWRIGHT Cristal Gonzalez Avila

She was born and raised in Watsonville Califas to Campesino parents, my first storytellers maestros were the trabajadores del campo ( those that harvest the land ). They shared stories of a home they left back in Mexico, in a foreign land, of the dreams they packed as they migrated to the United States , they exchanged stories of myths and legends between lunch breaks. They had an ability to transport in and out of places and spaces through their cuentos ( narrations ) . Our communities  greatest wealth is our historia, we cant touch it,  we feel it. Very much like my first maestros, I too am a campesina,  harvesting the stories within us and around us and with my harvest securing a future rich in art expressions for generations to come. I aim to harvest the cultural landscape of our rural tierras.

VIP Table - PLAYWRIGHT Carolina Perez

I am a Mestiza actress, story teller, cuenta cuentos, creator of experiences and churi churin fun flais.I have a background rooted in Jalisco, where I grew up within a nurturing and artistic community. I'm a founding member of Teatro Alebrijes. I feel honored to have work in productions with Teatro Vision, El Teatro Campesino and Artists Ink. I believe that we can heal ourselves and each other through art and community..and a good meal with friends and family. After dedicating 24 years to the manufacturing industry, I now find immense joy and purpose in empowering the youth and actively engaging in community initiatives in my beloved hometown of Gilroy. Her Film credits include: East Side Cenicienta 2022 by Artists Inc. and The Latina Book Club, written by Josefina Lopez (Real Women Have Curves) and Directed by Yel De Leon.

Los Coyotes - PLAYWRIGHT Dr. Javier Luis Hurtado

He is a playwright, director, researcher, and scholar of contemporary Latinx and LGBTQ+ theatre specializing in adaptations and ensemble-based performance. Their plays and performance work have been produced and developed at AS220 (Providence, Rhode Island), Brava Theatre Center (San Francisco, California), Teatro Alebrijes (San José, California), El Teatro Campesino (San Juan Bautista, California), through the National Queer Arts Festival (San Francisco, California) and at the Goodman Theater (Chicago, Illinois) and Chicago Dramatists through the Fornes Playwrights Workshop. Javier earned an MFA in Writing for Performance from UC Riverside and a PhD from Tufts University in Theatre and Performance Studies.

Out for Finals - PLAYWRIGHT Maribel Martínez

(all pronouns)  is a Queer Chicanx of P'urhépecha heritage. Maribel is a brainiac, storyteller, and dream warrior- shapeshifter. By day, Maribel works in public policy. After hours, Maribel lets the wild rumpus start. As a founding member of La Peña's Hybrid Performance Experiment Ensemble, Maribel co-wrote and performed in the full-length play 2012: The Time of No Time which included footage from multiple pieces on a moving BART train. Maribel's performance background has lent itself to participating in cultural artivism projects such as the productions of Somos Mayfairs' annual community Pastorela and the Multicultural Artists Guild's Dia de los Muertos Ofrenda Festival, whose works are used to inform the community of rich cultural heritage and examine current political climates. Maribel founded The Queerceañera Project SJ, a Latinx LGBTQ2S community storytelling organization. Maribel's first solo play Becoming (Mar) was produced by Teatro Vision in 2021, and it includes themes of indigenous teachings and LGBTQ identity. Maribel's selected poems are included in the upcoming anthology and the Mujeres de Maiz 20-year Anthology. She is a member of the Califas en Comunidad writers group out of UCSB Las Maestras Center, a playwright participant of Primeras Paginas, a 2023 VONA participant, and a member of the Macondo Writer's Retreat, a homeland for writers created by Sanda Cisneros. Maribel was awarded an inaugural Cultura Fellowship with Movimiento de Arte Y Cultura Latino Americana, an artist award through the Center for Cultural Innovation, and an emerging artist award by the California Arts Council.
