Odori dance Level II with Gen Taiko and Odori School

Free sessions are being offered by GenRyu Arts in partnership with the Japan Center Malls. These sessions will be held in San Francisco's Japan Town and will provide a way to continue to cultivate a connection with those who want to pursue Japanese Cultural Arts in music, and dance forms.

We will work on two dances, Tokyo Gorin (Created for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020), and Soranbushi modern rock version used for yosakoi style dancing.

We will review two short dances taught in Beginning Odori dance classes with Gen Taiko and Odori School that are commonly used for folk dance. Hanagasa Ondo dance using a flower hat. The origins of the Yamagata Hanagasa Festival lie in the 1963 Zao Summer Festival, a promotional event encouraging tourism in Yamagatas Zao region. The finale of that festival was the Hanagasa Ondo Parade (Flower Hat Folk Song Parade). From 1965, this Hanagasa Ondo Parade became a stand-alone event that we know today as the Yamagata Hanagasa Festival.

The second piece is an energetic piece from Shikoku Island in the city of Kochi a folk dance called, Yosakoi Naruko. Naruko is the name of the (hand instrument). Yosakoi Matsuri ("yosakoi festival") is a festival in the city of Kchi, Japan. The original yosakoi festival held every August since 1954, except 2020 due to Covid 19. In this festival, teams of dancers and floats crowd to dance the yosakoi naruko dance together. The number of participants has increased yearly: as of 2005 over 10,000 dancers participate in this competition every year.
