Metamorphoses
Mary Zimmerman's METAMORPHOSES is a modern retelling of ten famous myths recorded by the Roman author Ovid. As the title suggests, the play is all about metamorphoses--transformations or changes--frequently as the result of love. The drama includes the story of Midas, who accidentally transforms his daughter into gold because he is consumed by a love of money. The tale of Orpheus, who loves his wife Eurydice so passionately that he travels to the underworld to reclaim her from Hades. The story of Narcissus, who falls in love with the reflection of himself that he sees in the water of the river, ultimately changing into a flower that grows beside the river. The story of Myrrha, who is cursed by Aphrodite because she refuses to fall in love. The myth of Baucis and Philemon, an old couple who love humanity as dearly as they love each other. All of these stories are enacted in and around a large pool, with water--the most changeable of all substances--serving as a central metaphor in the play.
