NURSES AT THE FRONT LINE SURVIVING THE 21st CENTURY CHALLENGE
Nursing practice is driven by a growing number of mandates including laws, evidence-based practice guidelines and patient safety standards. The nurses ability to comply with these requirements is often at variance with the employers cost containment efforts and corporate profit margin considerations. Meeting the expectations of patients and families under these conditions, adds an additional level of complexity to challenges faced by nurses. When nurse staffing levels are inadequate to achieve outcome goals , patient safety is jeopardized and nurses are at heightened risk for work-related injuries, psychological stress and burnouts
Course Goals: The purpose of this presentation is to help nurses achieve a satisfying and successful clinical practice. Participants will be provided with pragmatic, solutions to commonly encountered workplace challenges. Staffing issues, nurse competencies and effective teamwork and communication will be explored.
Course Objectives: At the completion of this conference the participants should be able to:
1.Identify common hospital-acquired conditions and the legal consequences for the bedside nurse and hospital leadership team when these complications occur.
2.Describe how the Conditions of Participation for Hospitals in Medicare and the California Nurse Practice Act govern nursing practice, team leader / charge nurse supervisory duties and leadership accountability.
3.Identify the most effective strategies for improving nurse staffing when patient census and acuity level require additional nursing team members.
4.Discuss the competency requirements of nurses who are cross-trained or floated and the supervisory duties of the Resource Nurse as defined by California law.
5.Identify at least five key components of effective team communication that improve patient outcomes.
6.Describe effective strategies that directly engage leadership team members in the resolution of patient care issues.
7.Discuss the requirements for staff education regarding workplace violence and identify current nursing resources that address patient / family violence.
8.List at least four methods for promptly managing incidents of workplace bullying, harassment and disruptive provider behavior.
9.List at least five legal duties of the Charge Nurse / Team Leader Role, including the Chain of Command process.
10.Identify the most common claims of nursing negligence and effective strategies to reduce nurse liability.
