Transgender Cultural Competency Training
The North Dakota Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that 29% of LGBTQ+ youth have attempted suicide, which is 58 times the national average. As these youth grow into adults they experiences disproportional levels of poverty, discrimination, and violence that impact every facet of their life. When you mix that with the lack of resources and statewide prejudice we find in North Dakota, it becomes difficult for queer individuals to even survive in this state.
The transgender cultural competency training we give is design to mitigate the negative outcomes for transgender lives by equipping professionals with the tools to adequately serve this population. Specifically, this training gives individuals a better understanding of the transgender condition by exploring the population demographics, thoroughly examining the transgender condition, looking at organizationally specific negative outcomes, and utilizing tools for process improvement. This training focuses on how professionals can do a better job, it does not require nor ask individuals to be allies.
