Joy Sheffield Harris, author of The Florida Cracker Cookbook
Join us in the bookstore for an evening with Joy Sheffield Harris, author of The Florida Cracker Cookbook, and enjoy delicious hors d'oeuvres from the cookbook prepared by Jeri's Midtown Café!
ABOUT THE BOOK From a simple one-story cabin in the piney woods of the Panhandle to a high-rise condo along the glistening waterways, Cracker cooking in Florida has evolved with our tastes and times. When supplies were limited and the workday arduous, black coffee with leftover cornbread might serve as breakfast. Today's bounty and life's relative ease bring mornings with lattes and biscotti, biscuits and sausage gravy. What's on the plate has changed, but our heritage infuses who we are. As we follow the path laid out by gastronomic pioneers, this culinary quest, guided by sixth-generation Cracker Joy Sheffield Harris, will whet your appetite with recipes and sumptuous reflections. Pull up a chair and dig in.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Joy Sheffield Harris was born in Tripoli, Libya, on Wheelus Field Air Force Base, but moved to Florida just in time to attend Humpty Dumpty Kindergarten and, later, Florida State University. She was a home economics and history teacher, as well as a marketing specialist for both the Florida Department of Natural Resources and the Florida Poultry Federation. Joy met her husband, Jack, while promoting Florida's natural bounty on television in the early '80s. After they were married, they briefly owned a restaurant with friends, called Harris and Company, and in 2010 they co-wrote Easy Breezy Florida Cooking. Other books by Joy are A Culinary History of Florida and Florida Sweets.
Tickets are $35 and include a copy of The Florida Cracker Cookbook (retail $22) as well as hors d'ouevres and wine from Jeri's Midtown Café.
