SIDE EFFECTS travels back to 2009 in order to better interrogate the present as it relates to the American Dream, gentrification, and the marijuana industry.
The play follows two very different (weed smoking) households in San Franciscos Bernal Heights neighborhood. On one street we find a married couple struggling to start a family in their newly purchased home. On another street we are introduced to a mother and daughter in the process of rebuilding their relationship upon the daughter's return home from a marijuana-related prison sentence. This play asks us to consider where exactly do privilege and hope intersect and to what effect?
The piece premieres April 04-19, 2020 at the Burial Clay Theatre in the heart of the City's Western Addition as part of Campo Santo's residency with African American Art and Culture Complex.
Founded in 1996, Campo Santo is an award-winning group committed to developing new Performance and to nurturing People of Color centered new Audiences. We were the long time resident company of Intersection for the Arts (1997-2014). We came to the theatre world because we saw how it could reflect the world we live in. We saw theatre open our own worlds through writers of color who were re-creating the world with their words, ones that helped address society's issues. We have created with many legends, heroes, poets and priestesses- great people and amazing artists: from Junot Diaz to Chinaka Hodge, Marcus Shelby to Ana Teresa Fernandez, literally hundreds, spanning the spectrum of art and activism, mediums and modalities: legends from Denis Johnson to Ntozake Shange; Jessica Hagedorn to Jimmy Baca; Vendela Vida to Dave Eggers. But we've always been fiercely committed to developing the "next"- future leaders of performance. This project and the lead artist reflect that goal.
Star Finch is an artist, a leader and visionary. Our work together (her first play premiere, and 3 subsequent productions) are testaments to the authenticity of a collaborative process but also its power to elevate social consciousness, and address real life concerns. Our most pressing goal with this is to continue to tell stories of our City IN our city. Leading with Star is a way, like her writing, that will keep us connected to our roots, both civically and culturally. We need to not only reflect our world, but pose new ways to exist and evolve.
Star Finch is a San Francisco native, Campo Santo company member and a resident playwright at Playwrights Foundation. Her plays include H.O.M.E. [Hookers on Mars Eventually] and BONDAGE (Princess Grace Award semifinalist, Relentless Award honorable mention). She has also contributed to various collaborative projects including, TheaterFirst's PARTICIPANTS and Campo Santo's ETHOS DE MASQUERADE. She has held residencies in Crowded Fire's R&D LAB and AlterTheater's Alter Lab. She is recipient of the San Francisco Arts Commission Individual Artist Commission in Theater for her work.

These are all local, People of Color artists invested in remaining here to tell our stories, and this is especially significant for this play about the changing San Francisco.
