SkillSwap: Building the Joy of Reading Aloud
SkillSwap is a barter-based education series featuring workshops on a variety of topics. There is no monetary registration fee; instead, each instructor suggests items or services they will accept in exchange for class participation.

Our volunteer instructors prepare based on how many people sign up, so PLEASE ONLY SIGN UP IF YOU WILL ACTUALLY ATTEND.

Class Description

Looking for ways to connect with your children and help them grow into eager, lifelong readers? Reading aloud to children of any age is one of the most beneficial habits you can develop in your home. Join us for an opportunity to learn about the many benefits of reading aloud and how to make the experience joyful and meaningful for everyone involved. Hear about new and well-loved titles from the world of childrens literature to get your reader laughing, crying, and begging for just one more chapter.

Age restrictions

Children of any age are welcome and encouraged to attend to participate as a family. If you are bringing children with you, please indicate their age(s) when you sign up.

About the Instructors

Katie Hartman has the best job in the world helping children fall in love with books. She is a lover of reading because she believes in the power of words and stories to connect individuals to themselves, others, and the world around them. Currently, she is an elementary reading specialist with Central York School District and graduate instructor for Wilson College. She enjoys collaborating with various organizations to find creative ways to promote the joy of reading throughout the community. She enjoys pursuing ideas and collaborations that speak to her heart, such as her project with elementary readers that brought a Little Free Library to John Rudy Park, or her organization of Yorks first Human Library. In all she does, she strives to bring others together and build understanding through the universal power of our stories.

Amy Warntz is a Reading Specialist at Sinking Springs Elementary School in Central York School District. She works with striving readers in grades 4-6 to cultivate the love of lifetime reading. Of course in her spare time you will find her reading anything from middle grade literature to picture books to self development books. When she's not reading you might just find her training for her next 5k or half marathon. Amy embraces the quote from Joseph Addison, "Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body."
