Triple Threat & Bread Crumbs
As part of The Scratch Seattle Workshop Series.
In Pen: Developmental Labs provides artists a unique opportunity to expand and more fully realize their work before their show receives a full production. Shows are still in the process of being created and design elements are intentionally kept simple. In order to both artistically and financially manage this experimental new program, The Scratch has partnered with director and producer Eddie DeHais. The Scratch is excited to continue our work with Eddie as they direct and help develop two new solo shows - Bread Crumbs by Jasmine Joshua, a powerful piece that was featured in the inaugural Seattle Workshop Series, and Triple Threat by Nicholas Bernard, a provocative piece new to The Scratch.

TRIPLE THREAT
Traditionally a Triple Threat is described as one who can sing, act, and dance. The term threat, as Ive come to understand it, describes the threat of this individual getting cast over you because of their ability to do and be it all. These are the people they tell you to watch out for. These are the people they say you dont want to go toe to toe with. But is that it? Black,Gay, and Disabled? Immigrant, Son, Poor? Educated, Tired, Angry? Do you feel threatened? You should.
Nicholas Japaul Bernard is a native of Rochester New York and a Seattlite of two years now. After getting his BFA is Dance Performance from SUNY Fredonia Bernard spent time in Western New York and Ohio before Jay OLeary all but forced him to apply for the Intiman Emerging Artist Program in 2017 where he formed his artistic partnership with Eddie DeHais under the tutelage of Sara Porkalob. A multi disciplined artist, since moving to Seattle Bernard has gotten the chance to work with a wide array of theaters in the Seattle area as well as garner a Gregory Award nomination for his work as Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Artwest) within his first year of moving to town. Past roles include: JaKeith - Rock of Ages (5th Ave), Davey Battle - Take Me Out (Strawberry Theatre), Citizen 3 - Citizen: an American Lyric (Sound Theatre Company). As a disabled, queer, and black artist Bernard is interested in fostering an artistic world in which marginalized people have the space to both give breath to their own stories as well not being regulated to that alone. We are more than our pain and more flexible than you want to give us credit.
BREAD CRUMBS
What even IS nonbinary anyway? A computer program? A tropical drink? A word that caused you to have an existential crisis when you finally realized oh my god, I think I might be one of those, but I'm married and have two kids already and what am I supposed to do now I have SO many bras? Join drag artist Harvey Gent (Jasmine Joshua) in a hilarious and wholly autobiographical queer spectacle, featuring pregnancy, trekking across tidepools in your underwear, and peeing one's pants in front of Very Important People.
Jasmine Joshua (they/them) is the Artistic Director of the Gregory Award-winning Reboot Theatre Company whose mission is to test new interpretations of established works through nontraditional casting and design. They are a local writer, director, and actor, having been seen on the stages of Intiman, Book-It, Annex, STAGEright, Seattle Musical Theatre, Bainbridge Performing Arts, and more. Jasmine graduated magna cum laude from UC Santa Cruz with a degree in Creative Writing and a minor in Jewish Studies. They studied acting at the Larry Moss Studio and improv with the Groundlings in Los Angeles. In a former life, Jasmine worked as a senior publicist in one of the top theatrical PR firms in the Bay Area, where they represented clients such as TheatreWorks, Smuin Ballet, Opera San Jose, various touring Broadway shows, and Monster Jam (yes, the monster truck rally), among others. They are currently working on a transgender musical as a part of the 5th Avenue Theatre's First Draft: Raise Your Voice program and looks forward to workshopping it in New York this fall. Jasmine will direct Cafe Nordo's Christmas show, opening December 2019.
