Something Like A Fairytale in Concert!
For one night only, original cast members of the award winning musical, Something Like A Fairytale, join new comers for an heartfelt cause. Something like a fairytale stars a young actress who has the opportunity to attend a Performing Arts Sleep-Away Camp with Vanguard Theatre Company of New Jersey. With steep but understandable tuition rates, the writer and composer, Lawrence Dandridge, reached out and put together this concert event to help raise funds toward her summer camp tuition.
This concert will feature Kazoani Gonmiah as Nicole, reprising a role that she is familiar with after performing it at the National Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 2017. Nicoles mother, Alyse, will be played by Aza DuBois opposite Aaron Bowes as Prince Donovan and Lawrence Dandridge (Writer/Composer) as James.
A story within a story, Something Like a Fairytale follows a mother who tells her young daughter the story of how she and the girl's father got together. She turns it into a fairytale so the little girl can understand it better. Through soulful music and fairytale magic, we hold a mirror to the realities of love in real life.
This show not only touches on universal subjects like parental pressure, love triangles, domestic disputes, and divorce (to name a few) but it also shines light on what it means to have a fairytale ending, specifically from the African American perspective.
Through music that is influenced by many genres, this show takes us on a relatable journey that bridges the gap between the version of love we all long for and the version of love most of us actually get. It's fun, it's honest, and it allows the audiences to see a piece of themselves in each character. Something Like a Fairytale was presented at the Thespis Theater Festival in the summer of 2016 and won 6 awards including Best Original Play, Best Score, and Best Director. Im 2017, SLAF was presented at the National Black Theater Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Vanguard Theater Company Summerstock, an intensive 16 day summer-stock sleep-away program for the serious musical theater performers between the ages of 1218. With Professional actors and counselors on staff, this program is one of its kind in creating the most welcoming, fun, and hardworking environment while also exemplifying Vanguards mission of D.R.E.A.M.
