This insect pinning workshop combines a brief introduction to the world of arachnids with hands-on instruction on how to pin and preserve specimens from start to finish.
You'll learn: - A brief introduction into the class of invertebrates known as Arachnida. - An in-depth look into the world of spiders and their role in our agriculture and ecosystem. - A basic understanding of the anatomy, behavior, and function of the scorpions and tarantulas used. - How to relax + pin one scorpion OR tarantula* from start to finish.
*PLEASE NOTE: your choice of either tarantula or scorpion must be specified with the purchase of your ticket so that I know how to prepare the materials for the class. If you do not make a choice, you will get a scorpion by default :)
All materials (insect pins, spreading block, forceps, specimens, and take-home box) will be provided and are included in the cost of your ticket. At the end of class, you'll be taking home your very own mounted tarantula or scorpion!
Anah Redding (Moth Mom) is an artist/craftsperson with a deep-rooted passion for insects and the natural world. Her inherent fascination for biological science was fueled by her job working in a curiosity shop, where she gained working knowledge in both taxidermy and insect pinning. After honing her skills, she began creating her own displays and started Moth Mom in 2018. She's pinned hundreds (thousands?) of insects, and would love nothing more than to share her passion and working knowledge with other bug nerds.
