Permaculture design promotes forest gardening, growing fruits, vegetables, and herbs in the understory of an orchard to create a thriving plant community with multiple yields. Learn about the seven layers of a food forest, what plants thrive in our area, and how to design and plant a complex interdependent food system.
Past students have found this a very worthwhile class for those wanting to integrate more perennial foods into their landscape/garden/farm, or diversify existing orchards. We are pairing it down for those with busy schedules- five hours on Saturday will cover the basics of building a food forest- the roles of the seven layers, nutrient cycling, everything gardens, topography and orientation in design, integrating animals, minimizing inputs, moderating allelopathy in walnut guilds, balancing light and shade, and much more.
Sunday will be hands on, experiential learning. Bring your gloves and help us add layers to a young food forest while we discuss soil types, soil amendments and techniques for soil building, building a healthy plant guild/community, and important herbs for the home garden.
