2019 Laramie County Master Gardeners' Spring Speaker Series
The Laramie County Master Gardeners present the 2019 Spring Speaker Series. Please join us to learn about native plants and the soil that helps them thrive.

***********

On March 16, Jane Dorn, the notable Wyoming naturalist, will speak about Wyoming native plants that flourish in our soils and climate, all the while attracting pollinators. Jane and her husband Robert Dorn wrote "Growing Native Plants of the Rocky Mountain Area" in 2007.

Jane's discussion will focus mainly on our abundant native shrubs and trees. Don't be surprised to hear snippets about how the plethora of beautiful native flowers can enhance your yard as well.

***********

On April 6, Drs. Jay and Urszula Norton, University of Wyoming professors, will show us soil secrets for optimum growing. Bring 2 cups of your soil and a clear plastic water bottle or a clear plastic pop bottle.

Dr. Jay Norton focuses on nutrient cycling in natural, disturbed and agricultural settings from the perspective of landscape and soil organic matter dynamics. He's interested in learning how interactions among landscapes, plant communities and land use affect resiliency and degradation-recovery processes as applied to on-the-ground ecological restoration and sustainable management.

Dr. Urszula Norton is an Associate Professor in Agroecology and Biogeochemistry. Her work focuses on soil-plant-atmosphere nutrient cycling and, specifically, the effects of cropping systems and soil management on agroecosystem sustainability. She will discuss cover crops, soil quality and weedy species competition in dryland farming. She is also faculty adviser to the UW Student ACRES Farm.
