The Mosaic Poem
A mosaic poem is a poem made up of sections, wherein the different moves/images/tones of each individual section add up to articulate something that couldn't have been accomplished in a purely stanza-broken poem. Through the distance afforded by the section break, we'll look at ways to leverage the space and freedom offered by sections while maintaining unity and a coherent sense of internal logic across that space. We'll look at poems from Ye Chun, Tim Seibles, James Wright, Terrance Hayes and Patricia Smith, and then participants will work on their own mosaic poems. Each of these poets has a different approach shows some of the range in approaching this type of poem and speaks to the vast possibilities open to us when working within this format.
