Hungarian Wine Dinner!
I met Robert Gilvesy in Hungary this past October. A Canadian-Hungarian, Robert moved back to Hungary in 1992 and started Gilvesy Winery, where he makes organic Hungarian wines. He had us to his house for dinner, and we sat on the lush, gorgeous shores of Lake Balaton and had a magical evening.
I want to try to recreate that night by having Robert to Dirt Candy on Wednesday, March 28, to host a wine dinner where we'll serve a six-course meal, each course paired with an organic Hungarian wine, either from Robert's Gilvesy winery, or from the Káli Kövek winery where he's also a partner. Robert will be talking about every wine, and giving us a crash course on the Hungarian wine scene. The menu may change as my mood changes and I'm also working on a new dish that might make it on, but it will roughly be:
* Korean Fried Broccoli & The Greens as snacks * Salt-Roasted Beets stuffed with their own curried greens * Confit Carrot Buns with a ginger & carrot ribbon salad * Spinach Spaetzle * Cheese Course * our brand new Mushroom & Chocolate dessert
Vegan guests are welcome, just let us know after you buy your ticket and we'll have vegan versions of everything for you.
Tickets are $125 per person (includes tip, but not tax) and they're on sale now.
Hungary has 22 winemaking regions (!) and Furmint, a white wine grape that's unique to Hungary and practically its national grape, is setting the trendy wine crowd's hearts a-flutter around the world. I know Hungarian wine sounds way off the beaten path, but I can't wait for you to try it!
