Join us this summer for some fantastic, explorative fun in the arts! John Tyler's first ever Explore the Arts Camps will be coming to the Midlothian Campus. With options for writers, artists and performers, John Tylers Explore the Arts Camps are a fun way for elementary, middle and high school students to create this summer.

Please be sure to select the camp(s) your would like to sign up for under the Tickets section. The cost for each camp to attend for the week is $125. Must by 18 or older to sign up. All attendees must arrive with parent or guardian present on the first day of camp to check-in.

Dates: July 16th, 2018 through July 20th, 2018
Location: John Tyler Community College's Midlothian Campus

Camps and descriptions below:


Drawing for Illustrators
Time: 9AM-12PM
Room: E301, Eliades Hall
Ages: 9th  12th Grade
Professor: Vince Zawada

Explore various drawing concepts used by illustrators. This camp combines traditional approaches, including drawing technique and perspective, and experimental materials such as scratchboard. This combination allows the students to develop, create, and explore their own illustrated works.


Paper Plays
Time: 1PM - 4PM
Room: TBD
Ages: Rising 4th - 8th Grade
Professor: Scott Horner

With paper being a versatile medium it is the ideal material for a storyteller! In this course students will work with paper to develop several components of theatrical storytelling including masks, puppets, props, and lastly to put on a small play. Students will come away with an understanding of several different techniques regarding paper and also a firm understanding of the principles of sequential storytelling.


Fantasy/Sci-Fi Workshop
Time: 9AM - 12PM
Room: TBD
Ages: Rising 7th - 12th  grade
Professor: Janice Repka

Explore and develop your own unique writing voice while creating an imaginative world in this fantasy and science fiction creative writing workshop. Students will sharpen their powers of observation, imagination, and self-expression while exploring fiction craft basic and intermediate techniques.  No matter where your specific fantasy or science fiction interests might lie  heroic quest, magical realism, supernatural, dystopian, alien, cyberpunk or other subgenre  come join a group of similarly minded muses as we explore all that speculative writing has to offer.


Tall Tales, Fairy Tales, and Legends
Time: 1PM - 4 PM
Room: TBD
Ages: Rising 3rd -6th grade
Professor: Janice Repka

Create your own tall tales, fairy tales, and legends in this fun-filled junior creative writing workshop. Students will develop, write, and share stories from their own imagination while learning how to use figurative language, with an emphasis on exaggeration and hyperbole. Come join us as we create story teller cootie catchers, fable wheels, and other unique narrative tools.  This junior writing workshop will culminate in a story-sharing celebration of student creative work. Students will graduate with a keep-sake copy of their best work.


Exploring Shakespeare
Time: 1PM - 4PM
Room: Lynn Theatre (T112), T-Building
Ages: Rising 9th - 12th  Grade
Professor: Foster Solomon

This program aims to immerse young people in the works of William Shakespeare through performance based activities. Campers will explore Shakespeares language through sonnets and scenes and engage in movement and stage combat exercises to help the text come alive. The camp will culminate in a performance for friends and family on the last day.
