Organic Beekeeping: Healthy Hives & Honeybees with Angela Röell
Day 1: 9-1pm: Nutrition & Biology of the Honeybee In the first session of this two-part series, Angela will provide an overview of the anatomy, physiology, and social structure of honeybees and their hives. Angela will explain honeybee nutritional needs and take participants through the tasks and activities of an organic beekeeper's yearreflecting on how to plan for bringing bees into their lives. Participants will leave this workshop with a deeper understanding of honeybees, the annual cycle of healthy hive care, and a vision of what beekeeping would look like integrated into their own daily life.
Day 2: 9am-1pm Hives & Honeybee Management In this second session of this two-part series, Angela will cover the types and components of honeybee hives and the various management styles. Angela will outline the appropriate equipment for different styles of hives, and provide guidance on non-toxic approaches to mite prevention and treatment. Angela will also guide participants in creating an apiary design and action plan for their scale and circumstance. Participants should leave this workshop with a plan in place to integrate beekeeping into their gardens, homesteads or farms. Presenter Bio Angela Röell is a faculty member in the University of Massachusetts Sustainable Farm and Food System program, Greenfield Community College and the Franklin County House of Corrections. Angela teaches experiential courses in beekeeping, food systems, food waste, and food preservation. Angela owns Yard Birds Farm, a homestead and honey business operating out of Montague, MA.
