Handmade Holiday with The Fashion Ration
Create beautiful, one-of-a-kind gifts for the ones you love this holiday season in a fun and creative environment with The Fashion Ration! Students will get lots of one-on-one attention with class size limited to five students.
These quick and easy projects are fun for everyone, from the seasoned crafter to the brand-new sewing baby. You'll learn basic machine and hand sewing skills, and you'll walk away with fabulous gift! Materials are provided for each class.
Nov. 29: Bow Ties for the Dapper Babe Learn to make fabulous clip on bow ties! These can go every which way - classic or quirky. I will have a wide selection of fabrics available, or bring your own. Learn how to use fusible interfacing and hand sew a bow tie clip. There will be a small amount of machine sewing, but bringing your own machine is not required.
Dec. 6: Upcycled Ultra Warm Mittens Use old wool and cashmere sweaters to make super warm mittens to keep you cozy all winter. This class is a good intro to garment sewing and the basics of making 2D fabric into a 3D object. There will be a selection of felted sweaters for participants to use, but if you have a sweater made of natural fibers that accidentally got shrunk, this is a great way to give it a new life! This class does require that you bring your own machine, but if you don't have one, accommodations can be made.
Dec. 13: Cool Catnip Toys Make adorable catnip toys for your favorite beast! There will be several templates available for shaped toys, and can be decorated however you like - this is a great one for kids. Learn the unique skills to sew small toys. There will be a small amount of machine sewing, but bringing your own machine is not required.
About the instructor: Nickey Robare has been sewing since childhood. In 2015 she founded The Fashion Ration, a queer friendly and body positive tailoring service, with the goal of giving folks with all types of bodies access to fashion that makes them feel great. She is the co-creator of Behind The Seams, a Northern Spark project focused on the intersections of fashion, the environment, and human rights. In addition to classes at her personal studio, she teaches youth and adults sewing at several Twin Cities non-profits.
