Legacy of Beauty: Youth Stewards Inspired by Doug Tompkins
As a part of the David Brower Center Event On Beauty, honoring Doug Tompkins' legacy, the nonprofit Rios to Rivers is holding an event at the center. Mentored and inspired by Doug Tompkins Ríos to Rivers Founder and Director, Weston Boyles, will speak about his experience working with and growing up around Doug Tompkins. Students from the Klamath Basin, including indigenous youth from the Káruk, Hupa, Yurok and Klamath Tribes will join Boyles in presenting their efforts to educate the world to why dams are being removed in their own watershed. The group will be joined by Author Kenneth Brower who will moderate the discussion.
Ríos to Rivers will be completing the second part of a youth river running exchange this year by bringing a delegation of eight Klamath River youth to Chile. During the expedition, the students will share their experiences with dams, degraded water quality, habitat loss, and the love and traditions that have secured their willpower to create change. They will also paddle the un-dammed, pristine Río Baker from source to sea along side the same Chilean students who they introduced to the Klamath.
