Baobab Leadership Initiative Silent Auction Gala
The Baobab Leadership Initiative (BLI) will be holding a Silent Auction Gala on March 12, 2010, from 6:00 to 9:00pm at the Louisiana Children's Museum to raise funds for a service learning trip to Ghana. The event will include hors d'oeuvres, tantalizing cocktails, and live local music and will feature a silent auction of distinctive items donated by local artists, retailers, and businesses.
BLI is a student driven non-profit whose goal is to build leadership skills in underserved high school youth and provide incentives and motivation for them to become community leaders. All of this year's 'Baobab Leaders' are from underserved populations and attend public high schools in New Orleans. Along with BLI's domestic programs, which include service learning projects and leadership skill building sessions, the organization will take the students on a life-changing two week trip to Ghana this summer to work alongside Peace Corps volunteers currently serving in the country.
"Travelling to Ghana has given me an appreciation for my own beliefs and cultures; as well as allowing me to meet people with hearts filled with kindness, love and humility," said Jessica Lennox, a BLI '05 alumnus. She is now a college graduate and interested in pursuing a career that involves working with kids that have been abused or neglected.
This year's class of BLI leaders includes representatives from Cohen High School, Douglas High School, O. Perry Walker High School, Greater Gentilly High School, and Sojourner Truth Academy. Since being selected last fall following a competitive application process, they have been engaged in numerous activities that focused on the leadership skills outlined by the students themselves during the first session. Over the next few months, the group will continue to grow as they implement what they have learned in a series of fundraisers, service projects, and cultural research. The program will conclude with the Ghana trip in June.
The Silent Auction Gala is BLI's largest fundraiser and will provide much of the financial support necessary for the trip and its activities. All proceeds from the auction will go directly toward BLI program costs and all contributions made to the organization are tax-deductible.
