The Skin of Our Teeth
"The earth's getting so silly, no wonder the sun turns cold!" muses Maggie Antrobus, ageless wife and mother, as she stares down a giant wall of ice approaching her suburban home in Excelsior, New Jersey. "It's cold!" cries her pet dinosaur. Maggie's holding a telegram from her husband George announcing he's just invented the alphabet... and the wheel. Refugees from all points of human history are arriving at her door, seeking safety and salvation. What's a mother to do?
Written in 1942 during the darkest days of World War II, Thornton Wilder's ambitious, sprawling comedy The Skin of Our Teeth asks why it is that humanity so often seems on the verge of extinction, only to somehow scrape through and renew itself, time and again. Filled with startlingly relevant references to climate change, environmental catastrophe, and human conflict, the play follows the affairs of the Antrobus family as they travel from pre-history into a very compelling present. How is it that George and Maggie are celebrating their 5,000th wedding anniversary? Come to the Fayette Congville auditorium and find out!
But wait, there's more: not only is humanity in danger of extinction so is the production! Will the set hold together? Will Sabina say her lines? What happened to the lights? In a metaphysical, metaphorical twist of meta-theater, Thornton Wilder nudges the audience to the edge of their seats you never know what will happen next (or even if it's part of the play). "At times during rehearsals, we couldn't tell if we were directing or acting..." says co-director Stephen Eldredge, "and if the actors were speaking as themselves, or their characters." Co-director Toby Bercovici adds "The play is a perfect marriage of form and content, and as such is constantly calling attention to itself... as the destruction of the world within the play bleeds out into the destruction of the play itself, so the boundaries between fiction and reality are blurred, and we come to see that we are always heavily entrenched in both."
The Northampton High School production of The Skin of Our Teeth features the creative contributions of over 40 NHS students; one of the most technically ambitious plays the school has ever attempted, the show promises to be visually vibrant and multimedia-rich.
