Special Event: Trade Justice
World Trade. Who benefits?
In support of gender equality, Miliband, Clegg, and Harman wore t-shirts commissioned by the Fawcett Society, boldly declaring that 'This is what a feminist looks like.' Others could also buy in: these same t-shirts were selling on the high street for £45.
To the embarrassment of all involved, the t-shirts were manufactured in a Mauritian sweatshop by women earning pennies an hour. Who profited from the exploitation of Mauritian desperation? Does international trade law or corporate regulation play a part in the equality debate? Is it possible to promote justice on the backs of sweatshop workers?
Our panel of speakers will consider these questions.
