Event
Caravaggio: Devil or Genius
17th century Rome was a city of bandits, brawls, sex and scandal it was a time of intense religious instability and confusion. And art was required to take a leading role in pulling people back to the Church of Rome. The scene was dominated by the violent and enigmatic Caravaggio, a radical realist Baroque artist who repelled and shocked many, but was worshipped and cherished by others. Paintings that show dancing ladies with decapitated heads on platters and dead people suddenly sitting next to you at supper is typical of his oeuvre. On this Art Shot we will focus on the National Gallery's excellent collection of Caravaggio's outstanding paintings and also consider the intense effect he had on his contemporaries.
