Seminar with Dr. Robert Stolorow, PhD
In this seminar we will discuss Dr. Stolorow's article, "Legacies of the Golden Age: A Memoir of a Collaboration," available on the MAP website. Participants will have the opportunity to network and engage in a seminar-style discussion with Dr. Stolorow and other students. Topics will include his collaboration with Dr. George Atwood, the development of various aspects of their intersubjective, phenomenological theory of psychoanalysis, and the relationship between this theory and its practice. Questions from participants are encouraged!
Abstract: This article tells the story of an intellectual and personal relationship, spanning more than 4 decades. The account begins with a golden age period in the 1970s at Rutgers University, where an effort was made to resurrect the personological tradition in psychology under the leadership of Silvan Tomkins. In spite of the eventual failure of this effort, the foundation of our collaboration had been lastingly formed. The focus of the discussion is on a series of epiphanies that occurred, moments of shared inspiration that in each instance gave rise to significant writings over the ensuing years. We also describe the deepening personal connection that was the context of these developments.
Dr. Stolorow is a renowned theorist, therapist, and author of several books who integrates psychoanalysis and phenomenological thinking. He is most known for his ground-breaking work on intersubjectivity in the therapeutic alliance with his co-author George Atwood. He holds degrees in both Clinical Psychology and Philosophy.
