Bear/Skin
Circo Zero presents

Bear/Skin
... a performance in progress by Keith Hennessy

Anti-modernism. Fake healing. Real dancing, singing, & magik.

Designed for small audiences in studios and galleries, the work is intimate and low-tech. Bear/Skin is a performance-rite that uses dancing, singing, story telling, and magic to gather people together for a "moment" outside of daily life. The performance pretends to be informal and yet is motivated by grand spectacle and ambitious prayer.

Keith says, "The work circulates around a set of questions about healing, community, and change that have motivated my work since 1986 while making Religare with Contraband in the violent ruins of the Gartland Pit at the corner of Valencia and 16th Street

Bear/Skin approaches storytelling through the influence of both ADHD (speed, distraction, lack of focus) and dementia (scrambled meaning, memory loss, drifting). Under these influences I weave, poorly, an incomplete tale with too many disparate threads including: Modernism's complicated relationship to racism and orientalism AND the altered mental states of ADHD and dementia AND the personal and political economies of both suicide and torture AND racist structure of police murder and brutality AND gentrification AND the practice of ritual and the danced projections of primitive and animal AND the skin, especially the skin of the other. Bear/Skin is an autobiography and it is dance history. It is kid's play, therapy, ritual, trickery, and it is a dance unto death.

The central ritual involves dancing the exhausting sacrifice solo from Nijinsky's choreography for Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps. I am trying to die with this piece to allow new dancing (and more) to emerge from this (my, our) shifting body. A Scorpio ruled by Pluto and schooled in initiation, I offer myself to the Rite, in a paradoxical collusion of fake and real, satire and sincerity, performance and ritual.

And this is really an experiment. The work doesn't premier until January 2015."
