The New Tenant by Eugene Ionesco
Blank Line Collective Moves THE NEW TENANT to Chicago.
"'The New Tenant' is a treat for Blank Line Collective because the audience will play just as much of a role as the cast -featuring ensemble members Erica Barnes, Stephanie Brown, Amanda Lucas and Jenn SavaRyan. Set in an open artist studio, the play shifts quickly from realism to absurdism as the movers break the fourth wall and pile the looming furniture in and around the room and audience.
"Drama lies in extreme exaggeration of the feelings, an exaggeration that dislocates flat everyday reality." Eugene Ionesco says about his work. And Blank Line Collective could not agree more. "We think "The New Tenant" is about excess and baggage-physical and emotional," says ensemble member Erica Barnes. "It's about the extremes people will go to in order to make it through life." All Blank Line Collective shows are collaboratively created and directed-so from tablework through closing night, the four ensemble members and dramaturg, Tyler Monroe make all of the artistic decisions.
Blank Line Collective also recently discovered that "The New Tenant" has never been performed in Chicago. The play premiered in Finland in 1955, but apparently never made an appearance in Chicago. "We are very excited to premiere "The New Tenant," says Barnes. "Shocked. But very excited!"
A spectacle of terrifying simplicity. Moving Day. Objects accumulate onstage and overwhelm the new tenant, caretaker, and movers. Blank Line Collective presents Eugene Ionesco's Chicago Premiere of "The New Tenant." You'll see, there'll be room...
