RAFAEL DE CARMEN, Direct from Spain! At the 9th Annual Bay Area Flamenco Festival
The 9th Annual Bay Area Flamenco Festival is proud to present renowned flamenco dance artist from Spain, Rafael de Carmen. This performance will highlight Seville's flamenco dance legacy to which de Carmen is a direct heir. He will be joined by a group of top flamenco artists from Spain including special guest singer José Méndez and guitarist Antonio Moya. Del Carmen's early teachers were flamenco maestros Jose Galván and Manolo Marín and he was only 9 years old when he debuted at Seville's prestigious "Los Gallos" flamenco nightclub. He later went on to work with Manolete, one of the greatest Gypsy dancers of the 20th century. For many years de Carmen has been a featured dancer in Manuela Carrasco's company (he appeared with her at our 2010 Festival at Zellerbach Hall UC Berkeley). In recent years he has collaborated with many other flamenco greats such as Tomatito and La Lupi. Known as a master dance teacher, he has trained several of the best up-and-coming dancers on today's flamenco scene and will offer a workshop during the Festival for Bay Area dancers.
