Phoenix from the Flames: Wren and Hawksmoor City Churches
The calamitous Great Fire of London, which destroyed much of the old medieval city, heralded a unique opportunity to rebuild London as a grand European capital. Architects Sir Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor were the key players in this new kind of urban planning. Through the revolutionary English Baroque style of their City churches we will learn about one of the most fascinating architectural visions in European history.
We will visit the following churches: St Mary-le-Bow steeple (Wren), St Mary Aldermary (Wren), St Stephen's Walbrook (Wren), and St Mary Woolnoth (Hawksmoor).
-The cost of this event includes contributions to all the churches and admin fees. If you'd rather send a cheque of £38, please make one out to Art History UK and post it to 148 Sulgrave Road, London, W67PU. -If you cancel within a week of the event, half the cost of the tour will be refunded (£19). If you cancel within 24 hours of the tour, we regret that we will not be able to refund any of the cost. -Please note that we can only run this tour if we have an attendance of 5 people. If we have to cancel the tour we will give a week's notice. -For any other questions please email rose@arthistoryuk.com or call on +44 (0) 207 602 3716.
