Who's Afraid of Contemporary Art
Contemporary art can seem a daunting and strange thing for the newcomer, but with a nudge in the right direction it can be deeply rewarding and stimulating. In a small group to allow plenty of space for discussion and questions, this day will take you on a whistle-stop tour of the variety of contexts for contemporary art, as a way of understanding and ultimately enjoying the works on display. Starting at Tate Modern, we will consider contemporary art in relation to - and reaction against - classic modern art, and contextualise it historically. We will look at the different categories in which art is made now, looking at installation art, video, photography and the found object. After we shall move onto commercial west end galleries were we'll explore different contexts for contemporary art as a way of understanding the art world as a whole. Walking though the streets of Mayfair and it's surrounds, we shall discuss the way art is bought and sold, the nature of art fairs and auction houses, the role of the media, the function of curators, and the relationship between contemporary art and the public.
