Laboratories and clean rooms represent one of the most significant sources of energy consumption in today's buildings. While it is necessary to maintain specific operating conditions in these applications to guarantee safety, there are many control options available to meet these specifications that often go unexplored. These options include anything from new energy efficient technologies, to alternative methodologies for fume hoods control, to occupancy scheduling of non-critical spaces. In order to build more successful and efficient laboratories, these topics as well as some common pit falls of laboratory design will be discussed.
