Dr. Miguel De La Torre speaks at the Jensen Lectures
JENSEN LECTURES 2014 May 24 dinner and presentation with Dr. Miguel De La Torre
"The foreigner who lives among you must be treated like one of your own. Love them as you love yourself " Leviticus 19.34. Harold Jensen was one of the great prophetic pastors in the long history of Seattle First Baptist Church. During his tenure, 1938-1954, Dr. Jensen led the protest against the internment of Japanese-Americans and often went to court seeking aid for Japanese-Americans being dispossessed of their property by court order. We celebrate Dr. Jensen's legacy with this year's Jensen Lectures featuring Dr. Miguel De La Torre, professor of Social Ethics and Latino/a Studies at Iliff School of Theology in Denver, CO. Born in Cuba before the Castro Revolution, Dr. De La Torre was baptized a Roman Catholic, became a student at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and eventually earned his Ph.D. at Temple University in Social Ethics. He has received several national book awards and is a frequent speaker at national events, including last summer's Baptist Peace Fellowship in Spokane, WA. His work on immigration issues and the intersection of race, class and gender with religion, makes him the ideal contemporary voice to continue Dr. Jensen's legacy. Please join us:
Saturday, May 24, 6:30 p.m. dinner and presentation (Fridell). Please make dinner reservations through brownpapertickets. Tickets are free. Dr. De La Torre will speak about immigration and immigration reform from a biblical-ethical perspective.
